SEOUL - North Korea n leader Kim Jong Un condemned the trilateral military cooperation between the United States, Japan, and South Korea, asserting that it intensified regional tensions and vowed to implement countermeasures, including the advancement of nuclear capabilities.
According to state media KCNA, Kim stated that the deployment of US nuclear strategic assets, joint military exercises, and the deepening security cooperation with Japan and South Korea were creating a military imbalance in the region and posing a serious threat to the security environment. \'The DPRK does not seek unnecessary regional tension, but it will take persistent countermeasures to ensure regional military balance,' Kim declared during a visit to the defense ministry on Saturday to mark the founding anniversary of the North Korean Army. DPRK refers to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the official name of North Korea. \US President Donald Trump, following a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Friday, expressed intentions to engage with North Korea while underscoring concerns over its nuclear program. However, during his visit, Kim 'reaffirmed once again the unwavering policy of further developing nuclear forces,' KCNA reported. On the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, Kim stated: 'The army and people of the DPRK will always support and encourage the just cause of the Russian army and people in defending their sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity, in keeping with the spirit of the treaty on comprehensive strategic partnership between the DPRK and Russia.' Last month, South Korea raised suspicions that North Korea was preparing to deploy more troops to Russia, in addition to the estimated 11,000 soldiers already committed to the three-year conflict. In a separate commentary released on Sunday, North Korea's KCNA intensified its criticism of South Korea's military activities with the United States this year, warning that any aggressive actions would be met with unforeseen consequences. 'Anyone could easily guess how we would react to their conduct of war exercises more intense than ever before, at a time when diplomacy schedules were being cancelled due to political turmoil,' KCNA stated. —Reuter
