Former US President Donald Trump stated in a recent interview that he plans to contact North Korean leader Kim Jong Un again, despite previous diplomatic efforts failing to produce any lasting agreement to denuclearize the Korean peninsula. Trump acknowledged the positive relationship he had with Kim during his presidency, but acknowledged that his efforts were ultimately unsuccessful.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — US President Donald Trump stated in an interview broadcasted on Thursday that he intends to contact Kim Jong Un once more, characterizing the North Korea n leader, whom he previously met with three times, as a 'smart guy.' Trump enjoyed a unique diplomatic rapport with the reclusive Kim during his presidency from 2017 to 2021, not only meeting with him but also claiming the two 'fell in love.

' However, his own secretary of state, Marco Rubio, acknowledged during his confirmation hearing that the initiative failed to produce any lasting agreements to dismantle North Korea's nuclear program. When questioned during a Fox News interview about the possibility of reaching out to Kim again, Trump responded affirmatively, stating, 'I will, yeah. He liked me.'North Korea asserts that its pursuit of nuclear weapons is a response to threats posed by the United States and its allies, including South Korea. The two Koreas remain technically at war following the 1950 to 1953 conflict, which concluded with an armistice rather than a peace treaty. The isolated and impoverished North, which has conducted numerous nuclear tests and periodically test-fires missiles from its ballistic arsenal, also emphasizes its nuclear program as a symbol of its prestige. Washington and other countries warn, however, that the program is destabilizing, leading the UN to pass multiple resolutions prohibiting North Korea's nuclear endeavors.Rubio labeled Kim a 'dictator' during his Senate confirmation hearing earlier this month. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive assessment of broader North Korean policies. Rubio advocated for efforts to prevent a war between North Korea and South Korea and Japan, and to explore strategies for averting crises without encouraging other nations to develop their own nuclear weapons programs. During the Fox interview, Trump reminisced about his attempt to broker an arms deal with North Korea's allies, Russia and China, towards the end of his first term. The 2019 initiative aimed to establish new limitations on unregulated Russian nuclear weapons and persuade China to participate in an arms control pact, according to reports from that time. 'I was very close to having a deal. I would have made a deal with (Russian leader Vladimir) Putin on that, denuclearization... But we had a bad election that interrupted us,' he said, referring to his 2020 electoral defeat to Democrat Joe Biden. Trump's nominee to head the Pentagon, Pete Hegseth, recently described North Korea as a 'nuclear power' in a statement submitted to a Senate panel, according to reports. Seoul's defense ministry responded by stating that Pyongyang's status as a nuclear power 'cannot be recognized' and that it will collaborate with Washington to achieve denuclearization. Pyongyang fired several short-range ballistic missiles in the days leading up to Trump's inauguration on January 20, prompting analysts to speculate whether Kim was attempting to convey a message to Trump
