Some teachers described this HSC mechanics question as “out of reach for some of the best students”. Could you do it?

The last question of the highest-level maths HSC exam is notoriously difficult and this year’s was one of the most challenging yet, leaving many students stumped and even teachers wrestling with the answer.

Huong, who completed accelerated advanced and extension 1 maths in year 11, said the final projectile question was the most difficult. “The consistent high level of the questions made for a hard exam, but we must remember that even though they are the most capable students sitting HSC exams, they are still only 17 or 18 years old.

Prairiewood High maths teacher Katherine Le said while most of the paper was fair, questions about projections that asked students to analyse the components of a motion of a particle could be read as “ambiguous.” Year 12 maths student Yen Hoang, from Prairiewood High School, was one of 14 students in her extension 2 class this year.“There was a good range of equitable questions to challenge rich thinking in maths application. There were two new topics, vectors and proof, and they were very challenging,” Boys said.
