The NASAHubble Space Telescope has captured a new snapshot of the asteroid that NASA recently slammed with a spacecraft in an attempt to knock it off course. 7NEWS

The image, released Thursday in the US, is one of 18 observations the Hubble telescope has made of the Didymos-Dimorphos asteroid system since NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test, or DART, mission crashed a probe into Dimorphos in September.“Repeated observations from Hubble over the last several weeks have allowed scientists to present a more complete picture of how the system’s debris cloud has evolved over time,” NASA and the European Space Agency, which jointly operate Hubble, said.

“The twin tail is an unexpected development, although similar behaviour is commonly seen in comets and active asteroids. The Hubble observations provide the best-quality image of the double-tail to date.”Two tails of dust ejected from the asteroid hit in the DART mission are visible in a new Hubble Telescope image.NASA noted it is the northernmost tail that was newly created, and scientists will use data from Hubble in the coming months to examine more closely how it may have formed.

James Webb Space Telescope lets you ‘see things’ not normally ‘visible’ to HubbleJames Webb Space Telescope lets you ‘see things’ not normally ‘visible’ to HubbleANU astrophysicist and cosmologist Dr Brad Tucker says the James Webb Space Telescope has the ability to see things “normally not visible” to the Hubble telescope. This comes after the James Webb captured images of “Pillars of Creation” – new stars forming within dense clouds of gas and dust. “The problem with Hubble is it’s looking through optical colours, now that’s not a bad thing, those are the colours of light we see with our eyes,” Dr Tucker told Sky News host Peter Gleeson. He said, however, this “blocks or absorbs optical light” and renders it invisible. “But with James Webb and the infrared, you can kind of see through the dust … you can see more structure underneath,” he said.
