JAKARTA is considering the request of Manila to transfer death row convict Filipino worker Mary Jane Veloso to Philippine custody.
Minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra and Philippine Ambassador to Jakarta Gina Alagon Jamoralin during their November 11 meeting.
Under the new administration of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, the Philippines renewed this call. “However, as part of constructive diplomacy, Kemenko Kumham Impas is currently considering the option of ‘transfer of prisoner’ or prisoner transfer for foreign inmates, including Veloso, in line with requests from the inmate’s home country.
“If a foreign national prisoner has been returned to their home country, the responsibility for their rehabilitation rests with that country, including decisions on whether to grant remission or clemency; all of these decisions are handed over to the respective country,” the ministry said.
