The International Boxing Association (IBA) has vowed to take legal action against the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for allowing female boxers Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-ting to compete in the Paris Olympics, claiming it constitutes grounds for criminal prosecution. The IBA cites President Trump's executive order on transgender athletes as justification for the complaints, arguing that the IOC's decision jeopardized the safety and integrity of female sports.
The International Boxing Association ( IBA ) announced on Monday its intention to file criminal complaints against the International Olympic Committee ( IOC ) in the United States, France, and Switzerland. The IBA claims that the IOC 's decision to allow female boxers Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-ting to compete and win gold medals at the Paris Olympics last year may constitute grounds for criminal prosecution.
The IBA, which has been under scrutiny for its governance and financial practices, cites a US executive order on transgender athletes by President Donald Trump as justification for the complaints. The organization argues that any action or inaction that poses a safety risk to competition participants warrants investigation and potential criminal charges under Swiss law. Similar complaints are expected to be filed with the Attorneys General of France and the USA. The IBA also pledged to provide free legal advice to female boxers wishing to pursue cases against IOC president Thomas Bach and other senior Olympic officials. IBA president Umar Kremlev stated that President Trump's order banning transgender athletes from women's sports validates the IBA's efforts to protect the integrity of female sports. This legal action escalates a long-standing conflict between the IBA and the IOC, as well as between Kremlev and Bach. The IOC took control of boxing tournaments at the past two Summer Olympics in Tokyo and Paris, citing concerns about the IBA's operations. The IOC maintains that the boxers from Algeria and Taiwan, who were assigned female at birth and identify as women, met all the eligibility criteria for the Olympic tournament. Khelif and Lin were disqualified from the 2023 world championships organized by the IBA, which claimed they failed eligibility tests. The IOC reiterates that these athletes are not transgender and insists that their participation was in accordance with the rules
