House Speaker Martin Romualdez commends the 230 residents of Pag-asa Island for their resilience and commitment to living on this strategically important Philippine-held territory in the West Philippine Sea. He emphasizes the island's significance as a symbol of national sovereignty and underscores the government's commitment to improving the lives of the island community.

House Speaker Martin Romualdez lauded the 230 residents of the remote Pag-asa Island in Palawan for their unwavering dedication and sacrifice in calling this precarious yet strategically vital piece of real estate in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) their home. In a speech delivered by Pangasinan 3rd district Rep.

Rachel Arenas on January 16th, Romualdez emphasized the significance of Pag-asa Island not merely as a territorial asset but as a symbol of Filipino resilience and commitment to national sovereignty. He acknowledged the residents' courage in choosing to live on the frontlines of this complex geopolitical situation. 'You breathe life and meaning into this island,' Romualdez stated through Arenas, 'That's why I salute you for your dedication and sacrifice.' Pag-asa Island, part of the Kalayaan Island Group (KIG) in the WPS, stands as the largest Philippine-occupied feature in the contested Spratly Islands. It plays a pivotal role in asserting the country's sovereignty and defining its exclusive economic zone (EEZ) according to international law. Arenas, chairperson of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, led a delegation to the island, distributing food and essential supplies to the residents and military personnel stationed there. The visit was joined by Rizal 2nd district Rep. Emigdio Tanjuatco III, 1-Rider Party-list Rep. Rodge Gutierrez, representatives from the Office of the Speaker, the Caretaker District Office, and the Office of the Mayor. Romualdez, in his address, underlined the government's commitment to improving the lives of the island residents. He outlined ongoing and future projects, including the construction of a rural health unit, which he emphasized as crucial for ensuring accessible healthcare for the islanders. This development underscores the government's dedication to providing essential services and addressing the unique challenges faced by the remote community. Romualdez further assured the residents that their voices are heard in Congress and that their needs are being actively championed. He highlighted the ongoing and planned livelihood programs aimed at creating economic opportunities and empowering the residents. He pledged that Congress will continue to push for the necessary resources to support their well-being and prosperity
