Eight people have died in road traffic accidents during the holiday season, according to the Department of Health. Motorcycle accidents account for five of the fatalities.
One more person has died due to road traffic incidents this holiday season, bringing the total to eight, the Department of Health (DOH) said Monday. Of the fatalities, DOH said that five were involved in motorcycle accidents. The overall cases of road traffic incidents based on data from DOH’s eight pilot sites from December 22, 2024 to January 6, 2025, have reached 703. Forty-seven new cases were added to the tally on Monday.
Most of the people (603 cases) involved in the accidents were not wearing safety accessories such as helmets while 497 of the total incidents involved motorcycles. There were 127 cases also found intoxicated with alcohol when the accident occurred. The Land Transportation Office (LTO) earlier said it cancelled a total of 984 driver’s licenses last year for various offenses, many of them due to violations of driving while under the influence of alcohol. Specifically, 736 driver’s licenses were revoked for violation of Republic Act (RA) 10586 or the Anti-Drunk and Drugged Driving Act of 2013, which includes driving under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs/substance, and refusal to subject oneself to mandatory alcohol test during a vehicular accident.—AOL, GMA Integrated New
