Foreign Minister Penny Wong is downplaying expectations her trip to Beijing will lead to breakthroughs on trade or the detention of Australians.
Senator Wong confirmed she would push foras well as free journalist Cheng Lei and pro-democracy author Yang Hengjun. She will also raise human rights concerns.
“There has been a lot of speculation in the last 24 hours or more about what will happen,” Senator Wong said at a press conference alongside Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Tuesday. Senator Wong’s visit will be the first by an Australian minister to China since 2019. The last foreign ministerial visit was in November 2018.
