Firefighters made ventilation access holes throughout the roof of the Downeast Motel in an effort to quickly knockdown a fire at the Garlands Crossing facility Sept. 30. - Carole Morris-UnderhillGARLANDS CROSSING, N.S. — Everyone staying at the Downeast Motel in Garlands Crossing has been displaced for at least one night due to a fire in the building’s laundry room.
Fire crews were called out to a reported commercial structure fire in the 4200 block of Highway 1 in Garlands Crossing shortly before 11 p.m. Sept. 30. In examining the damage, Richard said at least three rooms have water and smoke damage and the laundry room had extensive fire, smoke and water damage.
According to the Downeast Motel website, the building is located on 2.07 acres and “each of the 20 units is separated from its neighbour by double-brick walls and each has cable TV, individual thermostats, and four-piece bath.” “A lot of the tenants were running back into their rooms, fetching personal belongings. We had to have RCMP here to secure the scene, keep everybody back.”Richard said they hope to have a better idea of the cause of the fire after they investigate in the daytime.
