A recent poll indicates that the vast majority of Greenlanders oppose joining the United States, despite President Trump's earlier interest. The poll results highlight the strong desire for continued self-determination and close ties with Denmark.
An opinion poll released on Tuesday revealed that an overwhelming majority of Greenland ers, 85%, do not desire to become part of the United States. This poll, conducted by Verian and commissioned by the Danish daily Berlingske and the Greenland ic daily Sermitsiaq, followed recent statements by US President Donald Trump who expressed the belief that Greenland was crucial to US security and suggested that Denmark relinquish control of the strategically located island.
The survey revealed that only 6% of Greenlanders favored US annexation, while 9% remained undecided.Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen affirmed her unwavering support for the principle of respecting international boundaries during meetings with French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. Commenting on the poll, Frederiksen expressed satisfaction that it reflected the desire of many Greenlanders for continued close cooperation with Denmark, albeit potentially in a modified form. She acknowledged that societal structures and relationships evolve over time.Denmark announced on Monday its intention to invest 14.6 billion crowns ($2.04 billion) in strengthening its military presence in the Arctic region. Greenland, possessing a landmass exceeding that of Mexico and a population of 57,000, gained substantial self-governing autonomy in 2009, including the right to secede from Denmark through a referendum. Greenlandic Prime Minister Mute Egede, who has intensified efforts towards independence, has consistently asserted that the island is not for sale and that ultimately, its people will determine its future. The US military maintains a permanent presence at the Pituffik Space Base in northwestern Greenland, a strategic location for its ballistic missile early-warning system, as the shortest route from Europe to North America traverses the island
