Human rights advocates in the Philippines are urging the US Congress to reject a bill that would impose sanctions on officials of the International Criminal Court (ICC). They argue that the bill could harm global justice efforts and threaten investigations into human rights violations, including the drug war in the Philippines.
Filipino human rights advocates sent letters to members of the United States House of Representatives opposing a bill that would sanction officials and personnel of the International Criminal Court ( ICC ). They argue that H.R. 8282, while intended to support a US ally during a time of war, would instead serve the interests of those seeking autocracy.
The bill, if enacted, would empower President Donald Trump to block any US transactions, or revoke visas of any official or personnel who would “investigate, arrest, detain, or prosecute a protected person,” referring to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israel Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. The Philippine letter states that any sanction on the ICC would inevitably affect all of its other investigations too, including the one on Rodrigo Duterte’s bloody war on drugs and the shadowy Davao Death Squad
