Globe Telecom Inc. (Globe) has successfully piloted 50 gigabit passive optical network (50GPON) technology, setting a new benchmark for broadband connectivity in the Philippines. The pilot test, conducted at Globe Valero Telepark in Makati City, demonstrated the capability of 50GPON to deliver multi-gigabit speeds and support various high-bandwidth applications. Globe plans to identify potential deployment areas and early adopters for this groundbreaking technology.
Globe Telecom Inc. (Globe) announced over the weekend that it had successfully conducted a pilot test of 50 gigabit passive optical network ( 50GPON ) technology. This advancement is anticipated to significantly improve connectivity across the Philippines . The pilot test, executed at the Globe Valero Telepark in Makati City, established a new standard for broadband connectivity and paved the way for delivering multi-gigabit speeds to customers.
During the test, various parameters were meticulously evaluated, including throughput, end-to-end latency, and jitter. Demonstrations showcased practical high-bandwidth applications, such as 8K streaming, cloud gaming, augmented and virtual reality, fiber-to-the-room connectivity, and high-definition videoconferencing. Globe asserts that 50GPON technology, which surpasses the existing 10-gigabit technology, will revolutionize digital experiences for users and fuel innovation in fields like real-time cloud gaming, 8K video streaming, and advanced smart home solutions. Furthermore, it will unlock opportunities for the development of smart cities, telemedicine, advanced manufacturing, e-learning, and secure enterprise connectivity. James Lim, Globe Vice President, emphasized the company's dedication to providing Filipinos with the best internet experience possible. He stated that this breakthrough in 50GPON technology is a cornerstone of their future-oriented approach to broadband connectivity. Lim added that this milestone marks a substantial step towards ensuring their network remains equipped to meet the evolving needs of their customers, both presently and in the future. Globe is currently identifying potential areas and early adopters in preparation for the wider deployment of 50GPON technology. On Friday, Globe shares closed at P2,278 each, down P22 or 0.96 percent.
