UN Tourism reports a full recovery of global tourism in 2024 with 1.4 billion international arrivals, surpassing 2023 figures. Strong demand and the recovery of Asian destinations fueled this growth, leading to a surge in tourist receipts and a promising outlook for 2025. However, the report also highlights concerns surrounding overcrowding in popular tourist destinations and emphasizes the need for sustainable tourism practices.
Global tourism experienced a full recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic in 2024, reaching pre-pandemic levels with 1.4 billion international tourist arrivals worldwide. This robust rebound was driven by strong demand from key markets and the ongoing recovery of destinations in Asia, according to UN Tourism. The number of international tourist arrivals in 2024 surpassed 2023's figures by 11 percent, marking a significant milestone in the sector's recovery.
Global tourism receipts also soared to $1.6 trillion in 2024, a 3.0 percent increase compared to 2023 and a 4.0 percent growth when accounting for inflation and currency fluctuations. This strong financial performance reflects the sustained momentum in the tourism sector. UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili expressed optimism about the future, stating that 'growth is expected to continue throughout 2025, driven by strong demand contributing to the socio-economic development of both mature and emerging destinations.'However, this surge in tourism has brought about challenges, particularly in popular destinations grappling with overcrowding. Venice is implementing measures to limit day-tripper influx into its historic center, while Japan has introduced daily hiker caps at Mount Fuji. Amsterdam and other port cities have also restricted the number of cruise ships allowed to dock. The UN body acknowledges these concerns and emphasizes the need for sustainable tourism practices, stating that 'this recalls our immense responsibility as a sector to accelerate transformation, placing people and planet at the centre of the development of tourism.' Looking ahead, the UN predicts a three to five percent growth in international arrivals in 2025, contingent on factors such as continued travel recovery in Asia, receding inflation, and the avoidance of geopolitical escalations.
