Gilas Pilipinas continued to flash its brilliance this year after beating New Zealand for the first time, 93-89, in the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers on Thursday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City. The Filipinos broke a four-game dry spell against the Tall Backs in a FIBA tournament under the guidance of Tim Cone, who formally took over the program this year.
Sotto, who was nursing a sprained ankle in his last Japanese B. League match before flying out back home, turned in a near triple-double with 19 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists on top of two steals and two blocks. The returning Scottie Thompson, who missed the 2024 Olympic Qualifying Tournament four months ago due to recurring back problems, poured nine of his 12 points in the second quarter that gave Gilas a 35-31 lead with five minutes remaining before the break.
