Giving up just 15 shots on net, Vancouver cruises to an opening game win over Victoria
The Vancouver Giants took Game 1 of their best-of-seven Western Conference semifinal Friday night because they gave up precious little.
A stingy Vancouver crew held the Victoria Royals to a mere 15 shots, and that was key to the Giants opening up their series with a 3-0 win before a crowd of 4,523 at the Langley Events Centre. Trent Miner got the shutout in the Vancouver net.The Giants won the Western Conference regular-season banner. They finished 29 points ahead of the Royals .
Vancouver gave up the league’s third-fewest goals against. Victoria was 16th in the 22-team loop in goals for.Davis Koch, Dawson Holt and former Royal Jared Dmytriw scored for Vancouver. Bowen Byram, the projected first-rounder in June’s NHL Draft, had two assists. He had missed a couple of days of practice with the Giants due to illness.Justin Sourdif returned to the Giants lineup on Friday.
Sourdif spent much of the year playing with Milos Roman and Brayden Watts on a line that regularly saw first-line minutes for Giants coach Michael Dyck. On Friday, Dyck opted to keep Jadon Joseph with Roman and Watts, and Sourdif played largely with Koch and either Lucas Svejkovsky or Tristen Nielsen.Victoria Royals vs. Vancouver Giants CLICK HERE to report a typo.
