As the ball sailed through the big sticks, complete chaos followed and the SCG was suddenly swamped by thousands of fans.
Getty chief photographer Cameron Spencer said it was his favourite image and explained the circumstances surroundingt the shot.“ Michael Willson and myself from different angles within seconds of Franklin kicking the ball,” Spencer said. “The anticipation for this goal was building for weeks and only five players prior and achieved such a milestone in the history of the sport. The last was back in 1996 in Melbourne.
“The majority of the crowd at the SCG, Swans supporters, ran onto the pitch to join in the celebrations, many commencing their pitch invasion even before the ball had gone through the posts. “Fortunately it was a goal and the atmosphere was electric, such incredible scenes as a sea of red and white swamped Buddy.”
