There were emotional scenes filled with tears and hugs at airports across the country when Australia reopened its international borders, quarantine-free, on February 21.
From late February to early April communities lived on edge at the whim of rapidly rising floodwaters and fast-changing evacuation orders.By the end of the first week of March, Southern Queensland and Northern NSW - including Lismore, seen here - had been drenched with more than a year's worth of rainfall in a single week.
The state's hard border drew strong criticism from outside of it and praise from within but the popular premier stayed defiant and was re-elected off the back of it. The cash rate was lifted by 25 basis points from 0.10 per cent to 0.35 per cent, marking the first rate rise since November 2010. "I am humbled by this victory. And I am honoured to be given the opportunity to serve as the 31st Prime Minister of Australia," he said.After spending years in community detention, asylum seekers affectionately known as the 'Biloela family' returned to the Queensland community they called home.

Floppy hats could become a ‘tradition’ as Shane Warne honoured at Boxing Day TestCricket Australia's General Manager of Events Joel Morrison says the MCG was where the “great king” Shane Warne did his best work and wearing a floppy hat at the Boxing Day Test “certainly” could become a tradition. Mr Morrison said it was a “fantastic” start to the Test with many spectators wearing floppy hats and zinc in tribute to the late cricket legend, who was also given a standing ovation. “It’s an occasion that is both a tinge of sadness but a reflection on such a magnificent career and someone who has had such a fantastic impact on many people’s lives, both inside cricket and outside of cricket,” he told Sky News Australia.
