Local government units (LGUs) should have more hand in the mass testing of people suspected of having the COVID-19, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian said Saturday.

Gatchalian made the recommendation as Valenzuela City launched its massive testing of medical frontliners, persons under investigation , and persons under monitoring for novel coronavirus disease in partnership with The Medical City.

“Hindi naman alam ni Gen. Galvez nasaan ‘to eh, alam ni Mayor nasaan to lahat, eh. Kaya importante talaga na sa lokal itong mass testing ,” he noted, referring to the chief implementer of the government’s national action plan against COVID-19. At the same time, he said the DOH should exert “extra effort” in expediting the accreditation of hospitals and laboratories to handle the tests, especially in LGUs, “so they can conduct the mass testing locally.”

National government officials earlier said the guidelines for the conduct of mass testing has been approved by the Interagency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases , although its specific contents have yet to be released.
