The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Saturday advised local government units (LGU) that spraying disinfectants to ward off the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) does not guarantee its effectiveness, as told by the Department of Health (DOH).

DILG Undersecretary and spokesperson Jonathan Malaya, in a report by GMA, said the declaration of the DOH, which leads the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging and Infectious Diseases , will be respected by the DILG and has advised the LGUs to act accordingly since it is a health matter.

Explaining its point further, the DOH noted that spraying may cause pathogens to be dispersed and cause skin irritation and chemical inhalation. The DOH has reiterated that there is no proof to substantiate that large scale misting of areas with disinfecting agents will kill the virus. Some residents confined in their homes have complained that they have inhaled the fumes from the chemical-infused disinfecting agents.
