A flash flood caused by clogged drainage affected 15 barangays in four municipalities in Negros Occidental, displacing over 6,000 people. Cadiz City was the hardest hit, with over 1,800 families affected.

BACOLOD CITY — A total of 15 barangay in four local government units were hit by a flash flood late Sunday evening, resulting in the evacuation of 2,055 families or 6,180 individuals, a report from the Provincial Disaster and Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) said on Monday, Dec 23. The flash flood hit Victorias City, Cadiz City , Sagay City and the municipality of Manapla.

The hardest hit by the flooding is Cadiz City, which reported that 1,842 families of 6,180 people were affected. Manapla reported that 214 families composed of 586 individuals were affected, while Victorias City had 10 affected families. Seven families were affected in Barangay Paraiso in Sagay City. Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson said the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) had already sent food packs to Manapla and Cadiz City. According to the PDRRMC report, Barangay Andres Bonifacio, Caduhaan and Magsaysay in Cadiz City recorded the highest flooding, reaching 10 to 15 feet maximum at around 10 p.m. on Sunday. By 9:30 on Monday morning, the flood had already subsided. Cadiz City Mayor Salvador Escalante Jr. said the affected families came from Barangay Luna, Daga, Caduha-an, Burgos and Andres Bonifacio. The mayor added that the city government had already issued a warning on the impending flood as early as midnight on Sunday. He said that in the relocation site in Villa Sagrado, Barangay Burgos, flood waters were reported to have reached the roof of some houses as it rose to about 6 to 8 feet in several areas. Escalante appealed to some evacuees to remain in their respective evacuation centers while still raining. The flooding was caused by clogged drainage due to overgrown nipa plants, the mayor said.
