THE number of firecracker-related injuries recorded by the Department of Health (DOH) across the country during the holiday season has increased to 843, as of Monday, January 6, 2025.The DOH said of the 843 firecracker-related injuries recorded from December 22, a total of 499 were aged 19 and below while 344 were 20 and above.Of the number of victims, 696 were male while 147 were female.The DOH confirmed four deaths caused by firecracker-related injuries and one case of stray bullet injury.
The recorded number of firecracker-related injuries is 38 percent higher than during the same period last year.Meanwhile, in a press conference, Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief of the Public Information Office (PIO) Brigadier General Jean Fajardo said they are continuously conducting an investigation to identify the suspect responsible for the death of the 19-year-old male victim, who was hit and killed by a stray bullet in Davao del Norte on the morning of January 1.“So lahat ng stray bullet cases lahat ng may mga narecover na slugs lahat yan ay dadaan sa crossmatching in the hope na ma-identify natin at ma-imatch natin sa database na hawak ng Forensic Group,” she said.(So all stray bullet cases, all those with recovered slugs, will go through cross-matching in the hope that we can identify and match them with the database held by the Forensic Group.)The PNP has recorded 37 cases of indiscriminate discharge of firearms, resulting in the injury of five individuals, the arrest of 37 individuals, and the confiscation of 21 firearms.
