Marc Pfister and Kathleen Dubberstein of the Philippines came close to winning a historic medal at the 9th Asian Winter Games, but ultimately fell short in the mixed doubles bronze-medal match against China. Despite a strong start and an impressive run through the tournament, the Filipino duo couldn't overcome a late surge from their Chinese opponents.

MANILA, Philippines — Unranked Marc Pfister and Kathleen Dubberstein came close to securing a historic medal for the Philippines but ultimately fell short in the 9th Asian Winter Games on Saturday. Han Yu and Wang Zhiyu of World's No. 15 China denied the Filipino curling duo a podium finish with a thrilling 6-5 victory in their mixed doubles bronze-medal match at the Harbin Pingfang District Curling Arena. \Pfister expressed, 'I thought we played not that badly, the experience was just lacking.

' The Filipinos dominated early, leading 4-0 after the first two ends, before the host nation patiently chipped away at the deficit, turning the tide in their favor. Despite the disappointment, the Filipino pair's journey was remarkable. They exceeded expectations, advancing through the round-robin stage of 12 countries with four wins and a single loss. They also triumphed over Chinese Taipei in the qualification match before falling to eventual gold medalist Japan in the crossover semifinals. \Pfister, a former member of Switzerland's national curling team who now holds a Philippine passport, and Filipino-American Dubberstein watched their lead evaporate in the sixth end, with Han and Wang seizing control at 6-4 entering the eighth and final end. After a string of scoreless ends, Team Philippines managed to gain a positional advantage, but Dubberstein's final rock missed its mark, costing them a chance at a comeback. Dubberstein reflected, 'Personally, I think I could have done better on my last rocks, but the way I missed the shots was very marginal. If we can work on honing those skills, I think we can do great next time.' \Pfister will compete with the Philippine men's team on Sunday, while Dubberstein joins the women's team. Pfister acknowledged the limited time they had to practice together, stating, 'We just played six or seven games together (before the tournament) and time was running out. That was the reason.' The team's performance reflects their dedication and potential in this burgeoning sport. In other events, speed skater Peter Joseph Groseclose narrowly missed advancing to the medal races in both the men's 1500m and 500m short track speed skating events. Alpine skier Tallulah Proulx also fell short of the podium in the women's slalom event, finishing 16th. Francis Ceccarelli will compete in the men's slalom, hoping to secure a top 30 finish
