UQ’s Garrick Professor of Law James Allan says making a maths exam compulsory for NSW HSC students from 2026 won’t really “get to the problem”.
“New South Wales has the fastest-falling education standards in the world,” he told Sky News host Rowan Dean.
“And it’s not just what we’re teaching, it’s how we’re teaching it, and it’s the kind of people who go into teaching, and we have problems across the board.”

‘The least’ Labor can do is be ‘transparent’ about Syrian repatriation planSky News host Peta Credlin says as citizens of a democracy, we deserve “proper information” about the Albanese government’s plan to repatriate the families of ISIS fighters from Syrian camps. 'No one from the government’s been prepared to level with the Australian people about who is coming, when they're coming, what crimes they may have committed, and how we’re going to be kept safe once they're back,” Ms Credlin said. She said it's this sort of 'gutlessness' to front the camera and provide the detail we all deserve that 'gives governments a bad name and that tarnishes our democracy'. 'There is a case that can be made for bringing them back, especially for the children who have done no wrong,' Ms Credlin said. 'I would probably argue against bringing the women back, but I would at least give a minister credit, standing in front of the cameras and making that case to the Australian people. “But that's what this government won’t do. And given this repatriation was never mentioned before the election, the least they can do now is be transparent.”

‘Political rectitude’ needs to be ‘maintained’Sky News host Peta Credlin says independent Senator David Pocock is 'threatening to scuttle the government's workplace relation laws' unless federal taxpayers forgive the ACT government's '$100 million in housing debt'. 'In defending his bid to make support for the government's industry-wide strike legislation, conditional upon a $100 million gift to the ACT, new Senator David Pocock cited the former government's alleged deal to drop Tasmania's housing debt in return for support for tax cuts,' Ms Credlin said. 'Well, on that two wrongs don't make a right – and I thought these green independents were supposed to be all about integrity. 'To her credit, Finance Minister Katy Gallagher has rebuffed Pocock's brazen demand, and she said, and I quote, 'I don't think it's right to waive debts for the price of a vote on the Senate floor'.' Ms Credlin said Ms Gallagher is 'absolutely right', but 'let's hope this political rectitude is maintained'.
