Senate President Francis Escudero maintains a stance of waiting for official communication from the House of Representatives regarding the status of impeachment complaints filed against Vice President Sara Duterte. Despite reports suggesting the complaints will be forwarded to the Speaker's office this week, Escudero refrains from commenting on speculations, emphasizing his commitment to only address the matter once the Senate receives the documents. He also clarifies that he will not engage in discussions about hearing the complaints while Congress is adjourned.
Senate President Francis 'Chiz' Escudero stated on Tuesday that there has been no official communication from the House of Representatives regarding the progress of impeachment complaints against Vice President Sara Duterte . Escudero declined to comment on reports that the impeachment complaints would be transmitted to the Office of Speaker Martin Romuladez this week, as announced by House Secretary General Reginald Velasco. 'I don't want to comment on speculations.
I will wait for it to reach the Senate, if it will indeed reach the Senate. I will only comment on it once it is in our court. While it is not her, it is not for me to issue a remark on that,' he said. Asked if there are any communications from the House, Escudero replied, 'None.'The Senate president also indicated that he would not preempt discussions about the possibility of hearing the impeachment complaints while Congress is adjourned. Congress will convene for a week before adjourning on February 7 to accommodate the campaign period and the May 2025 midterm elections. Congress will reconvene from June 2 to 13 before the 19th Congress concludes. At least 103 members of the House of Representatives must endorse an impeachment complaint for it to be directly transmitted to the Senate, which will serve as the impeachment court. If this occurs, there would be no need for the House Committee on Justice to conduct hearings on the impeachment complaints. The three impeachment complaints, all centering around the alleged misuse of confidential funds, were filed and endorsed late last year at the House of Representatives. Duterte earlier stated that she welcomes the impeachment complaints against her. 'So, it’s okay they filed an impeachment case since I’ll only be the one who's being attacked. I’ll only be the one who's being investigated. I’ll only be the one who is being attacked in the impeachment case. My staff in the Office of the Vice President and Department of Education will no longer be involved. I can finally answer what they are accusing me of,' Duterte said. — RSJ, GMA Integrated New
