Eric Jed Olivarez showcased his dominance in the tennis world, defeating veteran Johnny Arcilla in straight sets to claim the Governor’s Cup National Open Tennis Championship title. The 26-year-old rising star overwhelmed Arcilla, a seasoned Davis Cupper and multiple-time PCA Open champion, with his youthful energy, impressive experience, and unwavering hunger for victory.
Olivarez’s triumph, worth ₱100,000, came after a similarly decisive victory at the National Open in Parañaque, where Arcilla was forced to retire due to exhaustion. This latest encounter, held in conjunction with the Kasadyaan and Dinagyang Festival celebrations and sponsored by Governor Arthur Defensor, Jr., saw Olivarez maintain his composure and readiness to face any challenge thrown by the veteran Arcilla. The final match began with both players exchanging serves before Olivarez seized control, breaking Arcilla’s serve twice in the first set to claim a 6-3 victory. In the second set, Olivarez continued his relentless assault, breaking Arcilla early and holding his own serve comfortably to secure a 6-3 win. Despite a late rally by Arcilla, Olivarez remained steadfast, saving break points and ultimately winning the match with a display of poise and precision.
