CUSTOMS duties and maritime transportation costs are major contributors to the high logistics expenses for both imported and domestic containers in the Philippines, a study by an international advisory services company revealed.

Pablo Corralo Llorente, Bluefocus Infrastructure advisor, said, 'Maritime transportation is costlier in the Philippines than in neighboring countries in Southeast Asia, with destination charges playing a larger role.'Llorente presented the findings of a Bluefocus Infrastructure study in April titled 'Analysis of Logistics Costs for Imported and Domestic Containers in the Philippines' at a food security forum hosted by the Makati Business Club.

Port and terminal charges at the destination, mainly terminal handling rates, contribute a smaller share of only 5 percent to 10 percent.According to the study, the average logistics cost for an imported container in the Philippines amounts to $5,300 or approximately P311,372, representing slightly over 10 percent of the stock value.
