The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the Department of Education (DepEd) have signed a memorandum of agreement to continue the 'Tara, Basa!' tutoring program, aiming to provide educational support to struggling students.
DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian and DepEd Secretary Juan Edgardo Angara signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) to continue implementing the 'Tara, Basa!' tutoring program. The signing signifies the renewed commitment of both departments in providing educational support to youth and making learning more accessible to struggling or non-reader students.
Executive Order 76, signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, declared the 'Tara, Basa!' Tutoring Program as a flagship program of the national government. This order aims to ensure assistance from national and local government agencies, as well as encourage the private sector to establish a collaborative learning program for elementary students. The first agreement between DSWD and DepEd was signed during the pilot implementation of the 'Tara, Basa!' Tutoring program in August 2023, which was piloted in several areas in the National Capital Region. This reformatted educational assistance creates an ecosystem of learning where college students are trained and deployed as tutors to teach poor or struggling readers in public elementary schools and as youth development workers to conduct parent education sessions
