Mayor Jerry Treñas expresses his frustration over the delayed completion of engineering works on JM Basa Street (Calle Real), a historic shopping street in Iloilo City. He calls for the DPWH's urgent intervention, citing the significant inconvenience caused to residents and businesses.

ILOILO City Mayor Jerry Treñas has called for the urgent intervention of the Department of Public Works and Highways ( DPWH ) to expedite the completion of ongoing engineering works on JM Basa Street, also known as Calle Real. Calle Real (Royal Street), also known as JM Basa Street or Jose Maria Basa Street, is a historic street in Iloilo City Proper District. It has been a main shopping center since the Spanish era.

In a letter dated December 17, 2024 and addressed to DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan, Treñas highlighted the significant inconvenience caused by the delayed project. The street, Calle Real, a bustling street in old downtown Iloilo, was declared a heritage zone by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines on June 16, 2014 due to its significant commercial and business activity. The mayor said the initial expectation for the project's completion was December 13, 2024. However, the Iloilo City District Engineering Office, through Engineer Roy Pacanan requested multiple extensions, with the latest projected completion date set for December 20, 2024. Treñas expressed frustration over the delay, saying, 'It appears that the district engineer has no sense of urgency and is insensitive to the plight of more than 500,000 residents of Iloilo City who have been tremendously affected by the delayed project completion. This unprofessional gesture is inconsistent with your office’s battle cry of ‘Serbisyong May Bilis: Building Better More for a New Philippines.’” He also underscored the complaints he received from affected residents and business owners regarding the ongoing construction. 'I received several complaints, especially from the residents of lloilo City and nearby municipalities who are doing business and transacting within JM Basa Street/Calle Real and have experienced inconvenience, heavy traffic, and disruption in their business and commercial transactions due to the unfinished engineering works,' he said
