Police have charged a driver after he allegedly failed to stop following a crash that killed an 86-year-old man who was riding an electric bicycle on Perth's Mitchell Freeway.Police arrested the driver from Banksia Grove yesterday and seized a 4WDThe man was riding his e-bike just before 5:00am on Sunday when he collided with a silver four-wheel drive near the Hepburn Avenue exit in Kingsley, in the city's northern suburbs.
Police said the 45-year-old man who was driving the car did not stop after the collision, and the rider died at the scene from his injuries. Speaking on Sunday, Detective First Class Constable Benjamin Rooney said members of the public immediately rushed to the man and tried to revive him.Officers from the Major Crash Investigation Section arrested the 45-year-old man from Banksia Grove yesterday and seized the damaged 4WD from his residence.
Police allege he provided false information to the owner of the vehicle to explain the damage sustained in the crash, information which was subsequently included in an insurance claim.He has been charged with failing to stop and ensure assistance after an incident occasioning death, failing to report an incident occasioning death or grievous bodily harm, and attempting to pervert the course of justice.
The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing and police are appealing for anyone who saw the electric bicycle or the silver 4WD before or after the incident to call Crime Stoppers.
