Education Secretary Leonor Briones on Wednesday, April 8, said that the Department of Education (DepEd) is currently inclined to implement online learning for next school year should schools remain closed due to the threat of coronavirus virus (COVID-19).
DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones discusses public policy in education in the context of the Fourth Industrial Revolution during the 118th Founders’ Day of Silliman University in Dumaguete City on August 25.
Briones said that concerned units of DepEd are continuously working to ensure the continuity of the curriculum even if schools will remain closed due to the public health situation. “We’re looking into the use of ICT given these circumstances,” she explained.DepEd has earlier rolled out the DepEd Commons which is an online learning platform for teachers and learners. Currently, it has over 3 million unique users.
Briones said that in many countries affected by COVID-19, schools and governments are utilizing ICT and other available tools to ensure that studies of learners are not further disrupted. Briones said that the shift to online learning is seriously considered by DepEd. “This is not only for this time or during disasters… even if we make it through this crisis, there will be a need to implement this in the future,” she added.
