The Australian’s Legal Affairs Contributor Chris Merritt says “democracy is more than regular elections and government by the majority. It requires equal treatment by government of all citizens”.

“The way the voice would work, Indigenous Australians would have two options if they want to influence public policy… they can lobby their politicians… but they could also use their representative on the voice to have a second channel which is not available to non-Indigenous Australians,” Mr Merritt told Sky News host James Morrow.

“The logic for a voice by its proponents is that Indigenous people are the only group in society that has a special provision in the constitution.”

'Where matters directly impact Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, then the Voice would be consulted,” Mr Albanese told Woodford Folk Festival. “If there was a policy of support for Medicare, that’s for everyone, then that’s not about the Voice. “The constitution is our nation’s birth certificate and it should be a source of pride.”
