Esra Muceddemi , Mona Alkhalil and Mariya Selam are three women originally from Syria who now live in St. John’s. After an earthquake that killed many family and friends and left others without a home, they’re hoping more can be done to bring the survivors to Canada.ST. On Feb. 6, 2023, a new terror entered their lives when a 7.8 magnitude earthquake devastated the southern and central regions of both countries.COMMENTARY: 'Like the end of the world': Friends and family in Turkey, Syria need our help When the earthquake hit, her sister, her brother-in-law, three nephews, and her sister’s mother-in-law all died at the same time.A niece who lived in a different area is the only survivor.Mona Alkhalil holds a picture of her niece, Rahme, who is now eight years old. Their home is destroyed, but Rahme is finding it difficult to understand. A lover of birds, Rahme keeps looking for and asking about her two pet budgies which died in the earthquake.
“When this happened … I was trying to call them, and nobody was answering. I lost them for two days,” Alkhalil said.
