All three women have extended families in Syria and Turkey. When civil war broke out in 2011, their families were largely displaced throughout both countries. Fighting back tears, Selam explains in Arabic that her family fled to Turkey to find peace, a better future and education for her children.She has lost 11 people in her close family so far.

A few hours before the earthquake, Alkhalil called her. After five years of being away, her niece was visiting. Her mother and mother-in-law were there, too. They spent most of the night talking and went to bed late.
