ICYMI: Corner Brook Winter Carnival returns for milestone 50th year | SaltWire
Leif the Lucky, the Corner Brook Winter Carnival mascot, stands triumphant atop Marble Mountain. Leif, who emerges from his hut of ice and snow each year to kick off festivities, embodies the spirit of winter carnival. CONTRIBUTEDBernice Buckle has seen it all when it comes to the Corner Brook Winter Carnival.
Indeed, Buckle was present more than 50 years ago when the ski club took the first steps to develop an event to promote skiing on the west coast. In 1964, they organized a parade one Saturday in February, which concluded at city hall. It was led by Dr. Bob McLeod, who developed the idea and was the first person to dress as the carnival mascot Leif the Lucky. This soon became an annual event and was the forerunner to winter carnival.
Buckle has remained heavily involved in carnival through the years. She has since served in a variety of capacities as a carnival committee member, board member and as the board chair. Each year, the carnival kickstarts with much ceremonial pomp and circumstance as Leif the Lucky emerges from his hut of ice and snow.
But, for the last two years, COVID-19 has hindered that community revival. For 2021 and 2022, what was supposed to be the 50th winter carnival had to be postponed because of the pandemic. After such a long hiatus, the return of the event, and the accompanying community revival, is anticipated more than usual. What’s happening
