The Commission on Elections in the Negros Island Region is making contingency plans to ensure a smooth election process if Kanlaon Volcano's alert level is raised to 4 due to potential eruptions. Officials are preparing for the relocation of voting centers, election offices, ballot boxes, and other election materials to safer locations where evacuees are staying.

The Commission on Elections in the Negros Island Region is preparing for potential adjustments to its contingency plans if Kanlaon Volcano's status is raised to Alert Level 4 . Comelec regional director Lionel Marco Castillano stated that these adjustments are necessary due to the affected local government units also modifying their own contingency plans .

There are six local governments in Negros Island potentially impacted by the eruption, where voting centers might be set up near evacuation centers.Castillano has directed election officers to obtain certifications from school principals confirming the availability of classrooms that can serve as voting centers. He emphasized that the relocation of election offices would also be necessary if Kanlaon Volcano's alert level reaches 4, indicating an imminent hazardous eruption. Currently, the volcano is under Alert Level 3, signifying a high level of volcanic unrest.Castillano stated that the Comelec is prepared to transfer voting centers, election offices, ballot boxes, and other election materials to locations where evacuees are staying. The goal is to ensure the May 2025 elections proceed in the affected areas, avoiding disruption to the canvassing of results for senatorial and party-list candidates. Should the alert level escalate to 4, Castillano explained that evacuees from Canlaon City would be dispersed across evacuation centers in Negros Oriental, while those from Moises Padilla would be taken to Guihulngan City.He added that the transfer wouldn't just involve evacuees but also voting machines and election paraphernalia, with canvassing areas also being relocated. The Comelec is also considering makeshift polling centers in establishments. Meanwhile, a minor eruption occurred at Kanlaon Volcano Thursday afternoon, reported by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). The Phivolcs Kanlaon Observatory in La Carlota City stated that continuous rainfall transformed ash deposits into mudflow in the Buhangin River, flowing through La Castellana and Moises Padilla.Photos captured by the Moises Padilla Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office showed the muddy stream flow from the Intiguiwan Bridge in the town. Phivolcs reported a two-minute minor explosive eruption at the summit crater of Kanlaon Volcano at 3:11 p.m. Thursday, with ashfall recorded in Barangay Sag-ang, La Castellana. Reasident volcanologist in Negros Occidental, Mari- Andylene Quintia, stated that they are closely monitoring the volcano's activity following Thursday's eruption.Quintia emphasized that they are observing ground deformation, sulfur dioxide emissions, and seismicity. She suggested that the volcano's crater might be clogged, leading to pressure build-up from gas, resulting in the eruption. She cautioned that if the monitored parameters change abruptly, the alert level could be raised to Alert Level 4.
