Comelec Chairman George Garcia announces that the Philippine National Police (PNP) will no longer serve as Electoral Board (EB) members in the October 13 Bangsamoro Parliamentary Elections. Instead, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) will be tapped as substitutes for teachers who may be unavailable.
The Commission on Elections ( Comelec ) has announced a departure from its past practices for the upcoming Bangsamoro Parliamentary Elections (BPE) scheduled for October 13. Notably, the Philippine National Police (PNP) will no longer be utilized as Electoral Board (EB) members, a role they have traditionally fulfilled in previous elections. Comelec Chairman George Garcia clarified that this decision aims to allow the PNP to concentrate on maintaining peace and order during the elections.
Instead of relying on the PNP, the Comelec has chosen to recruit personnel from the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) to serve as substitutes for public school teachers, who normally comprise the majority of EB members. Garcia stated that approximately 1,000 PCG members are being prepared to take on this crucial role. The EB plays a vital role in the electoral process, responsible for conducting the Final Testing and Sealing (FTS) of election equipment, managing the voting process, counting ballots, and transmitting election results. While approximately 9,000 public school teachers have been designated as EB members for the October 13 polls, the PCG contingent will be available as backup if any teachers are unable to serve
