The Commission on Elections ( Comelec ) on Friday, December 27, 2024, affirmed its decision to disqualify former congressman Edgar Erice from running as a member of the House of Representatives in Caloocan City (2nd District) in the May 2025 polls due to his persistent criticisms of the automated election system (AES).
In its 30-page decision, the Commission en banc ruled to concur with the earlier decision of the Comelec Second Division to disqualify its outspoken critic owing to his public statements questioning the credibility of the AES of South Korean firm, Miru Systems. 'The integrity of elections is the cornerstone of democracy, and any act that undermines this foundation cannot be tolerated. Respondent's disqualification is not merely justified but necessary to protect the sanctity of our electoral process. This Commission must act decisively to ensure that the people's trust in their democratic institutions remains intact,' said the Comelec. 'Wherefore, premises considered, the Commission (En Banc) affirms the Commission (Second Division) Resolution dated 26 November 2024 insofar as it declared Respondent Edgar R. Erice as disqualified as a candidate for the position of Member, House of Representatives in the 2nd District of Caloocan City for the 12 May 2025 National and Local Elections,' the Comelec added. The Commission said the decision is based on the continued acts of Erice to discredit the electoral system in a bid to gain political advantage. 'Respondent's conduct reveals not only an unworthiness to seek public office but also a blatant disregard for the sanctity of the electoral process. Attempts to undermine the Commission's reputation and the integrity of elections for Respondent's personal gain cannot be permitted,' it stressed. The poll body also pointed that disqualifying Erice is necessary if it is to prevent further attacks at the credibility of the Commission
