While welcoming Penny Wong's upcoming trip to China, Australia’s shadow minister for foreign affairs declared it would pose as a 'test' for Labor amid its attempts to fix relations between Canberra and Beijing.

Senator Birmingham disagreed that the previous Coalition's actions and rhetoric were to blame for the breakdown in Australia’s relationship with China. Senator Birmingham said the real cause of the deterioration was China’s disproportionate response, as he believes the former government's decisions were always going to cause friction.
