A Chinese national residing in the Philippines for over a decade, posing as a businessman, has been arrested for alleged espionage. The individual, identified as Deng Yaunqing, established businesses in the country, which served as fronts to finance illicit activities. Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) spokesperson Col.
Margareth Padilla revealed that Deng utilized high-precision equipment for topographic mapping and 3D modeling to gather data on military installations and critical infrastructure. This equipment was used to map strategic areas including police and military camps, ports, malls, airports, seaports, communication grids, and energy infrastructure. The AFP is committed to releasing further data recovered from the seized equipment after forensic analysis is complete. This arrest marks the second suspected Chinese spy apprehended by Philippine authorities in the past year. Forensic analysis of equipment seized in the previous arrest also revealed images of military and police camps in Manila. Investigations are ongoing to determine if the recent arrests are connected to previous cases involving alleged Chinese spies. The Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) and the Intelligence Service of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (ISAFP) are scheduled to meet following the arrest. The PNP is also conducting its investigation to establish potential links between the recent arrests by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the May 2024 arrest. Meanwhile, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) confirmed that Deng Yaunqing was married to a Filipina and had traveled in and out of the Philippines since 2015. BI Commissioner Anthony Joel Viado stated that the bureau obtained details about Deng and shared them with the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the NBI to support the investigation. The BI will initiate deportation proceedings against Deng once local accountability and penalties are resolved.
