Foreign Minister Penny Wong will visit Beijing on Tuesday to meet with her Chinese counterpart, the latest breakthrough in the Albanese government’s bid to stabilise relations.
Australia and China will significantly ramp up their level of diplomatic engagement in the new year following a visit by Foreign Minister Penny Wong to Beijing, the latest milestone in the Albanese government’s bid to stabilise relations with Australia’s largest trading partner.
The trip is expected to produce an agreement to restore a series of regular bilateral policy dialogues that have been suspended since China essentially cut-off all high-level contact with Australia. While welcoming the visit, the Coalition said the increased dialogue with Beijing ultimately had to produce tangible results including the removal of trade tariffs on Australian wheat, wine and barley.
“Trade between Australia and China, as well as strong people-to-people, cultural and business links have delivered significant benefits to both our countries.” “The test indeed is also that Minister Wong needs to be sure that she is raising important issues of principle around respect for international laws in our region, respect for human rights and urging China to use influence they have for Russia to bring to an end the unfounded, illegal and immoral invasion of Ukraine.”
Human Rights Asia director Elaine Pearson called for Wong to put human rights at the centre of the trip, saying: “Wong is no doubt under pressure from the Chinese government to downplay human rights in this first high-level visit for years — a standard to which Beijing will try to hold other democracies.”
