Chartered flights bring home distressed OFWs despite MECQ
In a report on Sunday, the Department of Foreign Affairs said the total number of Filipinos repatriated from the various continents of the world since the COVID-19 pandemic began in February 2020 is 164,368.
An overwhelming majority or 76.1 percent of those repatriated in August were from the Middle East while the rest came from Asia and the Pacific, the Americas, Europe, and Africa.4,423 or 10.4% from Asia and the Pacific;In coordination with the different Philippine Embassies and Consulates abroad, the DFA mounted nine chartered flights in August which brought home distressed Filipinos from Malaysia, Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Lebanon.
These chartered flights were paid for using the billion-peso Assistance-to-Nationals Fund of the DFA. In late August, the department, through the Philippine Embassy in Tehran and its partner government agencies, also successfully repatriated stranded OFWs in Uzbekistan despite the lack of an embassy and consulate general in the country.
At the beginning of September, the DFA also brought home the second batch of repatriates from Lebanon, following the powerful twin blasts in Beirut, onboard a chartered Philippine Airlines flight.
