Cebu City plans to enforce a total ban on street parties and set a time limit for the liquor ban during the 2025 Sinulog Festival on Jan. 19. Cebu City Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia said on Friday, Jan. 3, that peace and order are among his top priorities for the festivities.
Garcia, in an interview on the side of the first coordination meeting for the 2025 Sinulog last Friday, told reporters that instead of imposing a total liquor ban for the entire day of the Sinulog Grand Parade and Showdown, it will be lifted earlier, at around 10 p.m., following the conclusion of the day’s activities. As for street parties, Garcia said he will not allow events on public roads or streets during Sinulog 2025, particularly near the Grand Parade route. However, he clarified that parties held in private or commercial establishments will still be permitted, provided they do not extend onto public roads. Garcia is also considering a ban on serving alcoholic beverages in bottles at business establishments. Instead, these should be served in glasses—though not plastic cups—to promote environmental sustainability. However, Garcia clarified that he has yet to consult stakeholders for their feedback on this proposal, adding that final provisions will be outlined in his upcoming executive order.“I understand that it might not be perfect, but we have to exhaust all means, and no stone must be left unturned. If it turns out effective, it can serve as a template for future Sinulog celebrations,” said Garcia.Last Friday marked the first coordination meeting of the year for the Sinulog Festival, held at the Social Hall in City Hall.It was attended by various stakeholders including the Cebu City Police Office, Armed Forces of the Philippines, Bureau of Fire Protection and other government enforcement agencies, the Cebu City government, and barangay official
