Despite a P3.3 billion reduction from the proposed budget, Cebu City Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia expressed satisfaction with the P14.6 billion budget approved by the City Council for 2025.
The annual budget for 2025 that the Cebu City Council approved on Friday, Dec. 27, 2024, may be P3.3 billion less than P17.9 billion proposed by the executive branch, but Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia is undeterred. In fact, Garcia is satisfied with the P14.6 billion budget that the council granted him.In a phone interview on Sunday, Dec. 29, he said that if any concerns regarding the budget arise in 2025, he can always ask the council to pass a supplemental budget.
“Malipayon ra gihapon ko sa budget (I am still happy with the budget). Although it is not as I would have wanted, which is P17.9 billion, naa sad tingale lain wisdom ang council (maybe the council has their own wisdom), I will no longer comment on that,” he said, adding, “Ang akoa lang, I am satisfied with the budget, pasalamat gihapon ko nila (I am thankful to them).”Significant cuts were made to various allocations under the amended budget that was approved. The committee on budget and finance reduced the funding for climate change adaptation and mitigation under the Office of the Mayor from P100 million to P1. The graduation subsidy was also slashed from P13.5 million to P1, while the City’s education initiative livelihood program was cut from P2 million to P1.The council also cut the allocation for the economic recovery grant from P100 million to P1 and reduced miscellaneous expenses for free education from P555 million to P100 million.Garcia was, however, disappointed with the cuts in the free education program, which provides public students with school bags, uniforms, shoes and supplies. “Sayangan lang ko ana (I felt bad about it). We put emphasis on education for the children, our hope for tomorrow, but they trimmed it down,” he said. When asked if he would consider using his veto powers as chief executive to override the council’s decision on the budget reductions, Garcia said it was an option. But given the limited time to review the approved budget, he said he plans to work with the P1
