A map shows the proposed changes to the West Pictou schools catchment areas. As school catchment boundaries currently stand, children from as far south as Lansdowne and as far north as River John travel to the same school - West Pictou Consolidated.

Jennifer Rodgers, communications manager for the CCRCE said they hope it addresses some longstanding issues. In addition, she noted, West Pictou Consolidated is currently the only elementary school in Pictou County that does not house a pre-primary program at the school site. Instead, the pre-primary children attend the Scotsburn or Salt Springs pre-primary site and return to West Pictou for their primary year.

“Our first exchange, which was focused on what’s important to the school communities, closed on Jan. 30,” Rodgers said. “We saw excellent input from over 130 participants, 90 thoughts, 1,808 ratings within the ThoughtExchange, as well as a great response to our designated email address.” Rodgers said the goal is to establish clear elementary catchment area boundaries for the 2023-24 school year.
