In a stunning turn of events, the two-time world champion landed flat on his back in his consecutive routines in still rings and vault that put a dent to his overall scores and eventually missing a spot to the all-around finals.
Carlos Yulo suffered devastating setbacks to his Paris Olympics bid after a couple of forgettable performances at the start of the 2023 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Antwerp, Belgium on Saturday, Sept. 30 .He started favorably by scoring 14.666 in parallel bars, 14.6 in floor exercise, 13.7 in horizontal bar and 13.233 in pommel horse.
But trouble caught the Tokyo Olympian in still rings where he fell on his back during his dismount that cost him to score a lowly 11.566 points. Still reeling from the fall, Yulo also landed on his back in vault – an event where he won his second world championship in 2021 and where he was the reigning Asian champion – that netted him a zero score.with 67.765 in the all-around where only the Top 24 gymnasts will advance to the finals.
However, all is not lost on Yulo as he is running third floor exercise with gymnasts from two more subdivisions competing at press time.He was already out in the running in horizontal bar with his current ranking at 18Yulo is competing for the first time without Munehiro Kugimiya – the Japanese coach who trained him mostly in Japan since 2016.
