U18 Major Hockey League Cape Breton West Islanders logoPORT HOOD — The Cape Breton West Islanders were hit with back-to-back shutouts at the hands of the Halifax McDonalds in Nova Scotia Under-18 Major Hockey League action over the weekend.
Hosting the Macs at the Al MacInnis Sports Centre, the Islanders lost 7-0 on Sunday and 4-0 on Saturday. Goalie Neil MacLean fended off 30 saves during Sunday’s game and 40 saves in Saturday’s game. Meanwhile in New Glasgow, the Sydney Mitsubishi Rush dropped a 5-2 decision against the Weeks Majors on Saturday. Darien Reynolds opening the scoring and Keegan O’Neill added a third-period power-play goal for the Rush , while netminder Johnathan Coombs stopped 26 of 31 shots.
The Rush and Islanders will head to New Glasgow later this week to take part in the league's third annual Showcase Weekend, set to be held Saturday and Sunday at the Pictou County Wellness Centre.— Saturday: Islanders vs. UPS Store South Shore Mustangs, 2 p.m.; Kohltech Valley Wildcats vs. Islanders, 6 p.m.; both games in the main arena. Wildcats vs. Rush, 2 p.m.; Rush vs. Mustangs, 6 p.m.; both games in auxiliary arena.
