Longtime Cape Breton Capers women’s basketball team coaching duo Fabian McKenzie, left, and Doug Connors are shown discussing a play during Atlantic University Sport action at Sullivan Field House in Sydney. McKenzie and Connors have been coaching together for 24 years and last weekend earned their 400th career victory together.
“Winning 400 games means we’ve been around a long time, that’s what it means,” laughed McKenzie, when asked by the Cape Breton Post how special the milestone is to him. “I think when it’s all said and done, and our careers are over, we’ll sit down, reflect and maybe write a book about it,” said McKenzie. “Until then, we’re just going day-by-day and just trying to help coach the kids.”
Since McKenzie and Connors took over the program, the team has won six AUS championships: 2004, 2006, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2017. “You have to have a lot of fun along the way or else you’d drive yourself nuts if you didn’t. Doug and I have enjoyed every minute coaching the players and we’re still having fun doing it now.”A coaching tandem lasting close to 25 years together is not something common in the world of sports. In fact, it’s almost unheard of regardless of the level of competition.
“Very rarely have we been into any kind of problems because we both understand what we’re trying to do and we’re both very competitive. We both know where we want to go and ultimately we steer the ship together – there hasn’t been a whole lot of issues.” “You don’t get to 400 wins or last 24 years unless you get to surround yourself with really great people and great players and Fabian and I have been lucky enough to do that,” said Connors.
