Both men are volunteers with the Canadian chapter of Team Rubicon, an international disaster response organization focused on serving vulnerable and at-risk populations affected by disaster. There are two Team Rubicon crews presently working in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality.
A state of emergency was enacted on Wednesday in a total of nine counties as an administrative function under the Emergency Management Act to allow the military to perform civilian road work and provide liability coverage.As well, John Lohr, Minister responsible for the Emergency Management Office, announced he has requested additional support from the Canadian Armed Forces to perform the road work, including flagging and signage, in areas where restoration crews need help.
"Some Nova Scotians are well into their second week dealing with the effects of hurricane Fiona, and the Canadian Armed Forces continues to play a critical role in the restoration efforts in our communities," Lohr said in a statement."This is an all-hands-on-deck approach.” John Lohr, Minister responsible for the Emergency Management Office:"This is an all-hands-on-deck approach."
