“Debris floods differ in that the volume you can expect is significantly higher than you would get from a typical analysis of river flooding,” he said. “The debris is a compounding factor because it will block your culverts and deposit in your channel, causing erosion.”
Through hazard assessments after the fact, Esarte said they were able to understand and contextualize the events of 2013. “Stone Creek, a tiny creek that can be dry for decades at a time, caused millions of dollars of damage to condo property up in Silvertip,” he said, “We had damage from Three Sisters Creek, creeks named X, Y, and Z.
